Australia's Open Garden Scheme Limited is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 1987. Its mission is to promote the knowledge and pleasure of gardens and gardening across Australia. It does this by opening Australia's most inspiring private gardens to the public.
Owners generously open their gardens to the public on specified days for a nominal fee. The majority of the Scheme's income is derived from these entry fees. The Scheme receives no external financial support.
Sixty Five percent of the entry fee is returned to the Open Garden Scheme to cover operating costs, with any surplus being returned each year to the community in the form of grants for garden related projects.
Since 1987 around $1,100,000 has been given to community garden projects by Australia's Open Garden Scheme. $4,700,000 has been donated by garden owners to charities and local causes.
Since 1987, the Scheme has been involved in the funding of 450 worthwhile community garden projects across Australia. These range from botanic garden and horticultural colleges to therapeutic gardens for hospitals and retirement villages. The Scheme has contributed to the restoration of historic landscapes and the development of new community parks. The Schemes commitment to the gardeners of the future is demonstrated by the substantial number of school gardens which have received funding.
